New Rules for Remote Work on Visitor Visas in New Zealand
New Rules for Remote Work on Visitor Visas in New Zealand
The New Zealand Government has announced changes to the rules for visitors. As of 27 January 2025, individuals entering New Zealand on a visitor visa or NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) can now work remotely for overseas employers while staying in the country.
This new policy applies to all visitors, including tourists, as well as those visiting family, and partners or guardians on longer-term visitor visas. The updated conditions allow tourists to live in New Zealand as digital nomads, keeping in touch with their overseas work without violating their visa terms.
Both visitor visa holders and those entering with an NZeTA will be granted these conditions, allowing remote work for overseas clients or employers.
However, visitors must adhere to the following restrictions:
They cannot work for a New Zealand employer.
They cannot provide goods or services to businesses or individuals in New Zealand.
They cannot engage in work that requires their physical presence at a New Zealand workplace.

These updates reduce New Zealand work experience requirements, increase points for NZ qualifications, and simplify wage rules. If you’re a skilled worker, tradesperson, or employer, these changes could make it easier to secure residence in New Zealand.
