New Zealand Student Visa FAQs – Requirements, Work Rights & Application Guide
-
A New Zealand student visa allows international students to study full-time in New Zealand at an approved education provider for more than three months. If you plan to study in NZ for more than 3 months, you will need a student visa.
-
Yes — for shorter courses (less than or equal to 3 months), or if you are from a visa-waiver country, you may be able to use a visitor visa instead of applying for a student visa. But for full-time study exceeding 3 months, a student visa is required.
-
To apply for a student visa, you’ll typically need:
An offer of place from an NZQA-approved education provider.
Proof of payment of tuition fees (or scholarship / financial guarantee) that covers fees.
Evidence that you can support your living expenses while in New Zealand.
Medical and character clearance (health checks, chest x-ray, police certificates if required) depending on length of stay and country of origin.
Valid passport (usually valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay) and acceptable photographs.
Full medical/travel insurance.
-
Processing time varies depending on several factors including your nationality, completeness of your documents, and current demand. As a general rule, apply at least 2-3 months before your intended start date of study to allow enough time.
-
You’ll need to prove you have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living costs, and other expenses. For example, universities often ask for evidence of having around NZ$20,000 for one year, or the pro-rata equivalent depending on the study duration.
-
Yes, many student visas allow part-time work during study periods (e.g. up to 20 hours/week) and full-time work during scheduled breaks (holidays). Some higher level research students (e.g. Masters by Research or PhD) may have fewer restrictions.
-
If your visa is expiring and you still need to complete your study, you can apply for a visa renewal. Make sure you apply before your current visa expires. If there’s a processing delay, Immigration NZ may issue an interim visa to allow you to remain lawfully while your renewal is considered.
-
A Pathway Student Visa allows you to study a sequence of approved programmes (for example, English language, foundation or preparatory courses, then tertiary study), up to a total of five years in some cases. This visa is designed for students whose first approved programme leads into further higher study.
-
Yes, under certain circumstances. Dependent children may be eligible for Dependent Child Student Visas if you hold a student visa. Also, for certain study levels, your partner may be eligible for a work permit. The exact eligibility depends on the qualification level and the visa conditions.
-
You will need to meet health requirements, which may include a medical examination and chest x-ray (especially if you are from certain countries or staying long-term). Also, health / travel insurance is required for the duration of your stay, especially if you are fee-paying international student. This ensures you are covered for medical and travel emergencies.
-
Full-time study generally means:
For tertiary institutions, enrolment in at least three courses (or equivalent credits) per semester.
For private training establishments (PTEs), courses meeting certain weekly hour requirements.
-
If your visa application is refused or delayed, you can:
Review the refusal letter for reasons (e.g. insufficient funds, missing documents, character/health concerns).
Provide any additional documents or clarifications requested.
Seek assistance from a licensed immigration adviser or migration agency (like Kiwiana Immigration).
Contact Immigration New Zealand directly for updates.
-
Costs include:
Visa application fee set by Immigration New Zealand.
Fee for health checks, translation of documents if required.
Insurance costs.
Proof of funds often includes showing bank statements and living expenses.
Actual fees depend on your country, study duration, and specific provider. It’s best to check the latest fee schedule on Immigration NZ’s website or through an adviser.
