Immigration New Zealand Updates OET English Language Test Requirements from 13 July 2026

Published: 29 June 2026

Immigration New Zealand to Accept Only In-Person OET Tests from 13 July 2026

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced an important update to its English language testing requirements for visa applicants using the Occupational English Test (OET).

From midnight (NZST) on 13 July 2026, applicants must complete all components of the OET at an approved, supervised test centre. OET tests completed online from home will no longer be accepted for immigration applications submitted using OET as evidence of English language proficiency.

What Is Changing?

From 13 July 2026, Immigration New Zealand will only accept:

  • ✅ OET tests completed entirely at an approved in-person test centre.

  • ❌ OET at Home (online) tests taken on or after 13 July 2026 will not be accepted.

This update applies to all immigration applications where OET is used to meet English language requirements.

Who Is Affected?

The change is particularly relevant for:

  • Healthcare professionals applying to work in New Zealand.

  • Nurses, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and other regulated health professionals using OET for immigration purposes.

  • Applicants planning to submit work, residence, or other visa applications requiring proof of English language ability.

What If You Already Took OET at Home?

If you completed an OET at Home test on or before 12 July 2026 (NZST), Immigration New Zealand will continue to accept those results for eligible visa applications.

However, any OET test taken on or after 13 July 2026 must be completed at an approved supervised testing centre.

Why Has Immigration New Zealand Made This Change?

According to Immigration New Zealand, the updated requirement aims to:

  • Maintain fairness across all English language assessments.

  • Protect the integrity of New Zealand's immigration system.

  • Ensure test results accurately reflect each applicant's own English language skills and ability.

Immigration New Zealand is working closely with OET to support applicants during the transition and minimise disruption.

What Should Applicants Do?

If you intend to use OET for your New Zealand visa application:

  • Book your OET test at an approved test centre if your exam date is on or after 13 July 2026.

  • If you have already completed an eligible OET at Home test before the deadline, retain your results for your application.

  • Plan ahead to avoid delays in your immigration process.
