Case Study: ANZSCO Occupation Assessment Concerns Addressed During Residence Application

Overview

Kiwiana Immigration recently assisted a residence applicant who received concerns from Immigration New Zealand (INZ) regarding whether their previous employment experience aligned with the occupation claimed under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC).

The applicant had claimed skilled work experience relating to:

ANZSCO 512111 – Office Manager

During assessment, INZ requested further information regarding the nature of the role and whether the position may have involved duties more consistent with another administrative occupation classification.

Following the provision of additional submissions and supporting documentation, INZ subsequently accepted the applicant’s skilled work experience for assessment purposes. The residence application was later approved by Immigration New Zealand.

Background

INZ sought clarification regarding the applicant’s previous employment duties and the extent to which the role aligned with the ANZSCO occupation claimed in the application.

The matters raised appeared to relate to:

  • the scope of administrative duties performed, and

  • whether some duties could be interpreted as routine reception or clerical tasks.

As part of the response process, the following information was reviewed:

  • the employment structure,

  • the applicant’s day-to-day responsibilities,

  • supporting employment evidence, and

  • the operational context of the business.

Information Provided in Response

A detailed response package was prepared to assist INZ with assessing the role in its full context.

The information submitted included:

  • clarification of the business structure,

  • explanation of the position within the organisation,

  • supporting employer documentation,

  • evidence relating to the duties performed, and

  • a comparison of the role against relevant ANZSCO tasks and responsibilities.

The response also addressed that:

  • the business did not operate with a separate dedicated receptionist position,

  • the applicant performed a range of office coordination and administrative functions, and

  • some customer-facing or clerical tasks formed only a minor part of the overall role.

Role Responsibilities Considered

The information provided to INZ indicated that the applicant’s responsibilities included functions such as:

  • coordinating office administration activities,

  • maintaining records and internal systems,

  • liaising with suppliers, clients, and staff,

  • assisting with operational administration,

  • supporting internal office procedures, and

  • contributing to reporting and organisational processes.

The response requested that the role be assessed based on the overall nature of the position and the primary responsibilities performed.

Outcome

Following consideration of the additional information and submissions provided, INZ accepted the applicant’s skilled work experience for residence assessment purposes.

The application was subsequently approved by Immigration New Zealand.

General Information for Applicants

Questions relating to ANZSCO alignment may arise where:

  • job titles differ from ANZSCO terminology,

  • businesses operate with flexible staffing structures,

  • employees perform a combination of duties, or

  • the original application documentation does not fully explain the scope of the role.

Where concerns are raised, applicants may have an opportunity to provide further information and supporting evidence for consideration.
