New and Updated Post-Study Work Visa Options Announced for International Graduates

Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to post-study work options for international graduates. These changes are designed to better align graduate pathways with New Zealand's workforce needs while continuing to support the growth of international education.

The updates include:

  • Introduction of a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa

  • Expanded eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)

  • Additional opportunities for graduates to transition from study to employment in New Zealand

These changes are scheduled to take effect from 16 November 2026.

New Short-term Graduate Work Visa

A new Short-term Graduate Work Visa will become available from 16 November 2026 for eligible international students who have completed certain qualifications in New Zealand but do not qualify for a Post Study Work Visa.

Key Features

  • Provides 6 months of open work rights

  • Allows graduates time to seek suitable employment

  • Can support a pathway towards an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

  • Available only once in a lifetime

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5–7

  • Have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks

  • Not have completed an English language, foundation, or bridging programme

  • Have at least NZD $5,000 available for living costs

  • Meet health requirements where applicable

  • Apply within 3 months of their student visa expiring

  • Not have previously held either a Post Study Work Visa or a Short-term Graduate Work Visa

Visa holders will be able to work for employers under employment agreements or contracts for services. However, business ownership and self-employment will not be permitted under this visa category.

Expanded Post Study Work Visa Eligibility

From 16 November 2026, graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 may become eligible for a Post Study Work Visa if they also hold a bachelor's degree obtained either in New Zealand or overseas.

To Qualify, Graduates Must:

  • Complete a Graduate Diploma at Level 7

  • Study full-time in New Zealand for the entire qualification

  • Be enrolled for the full duration of the programme

  • Hold a bachelor's degree, regardless of when it was awarded

Applicants will need to provide:

  • A copy of their bachelor's degree certificate

  • Official academic transcripts

An International Qualification Assessment (IQA) will generally not be required for overseas bachelor's degrees.

Duration of the Post Study Work Visa

Eligible graduate diploma holders may receive a Post Study Work Visa for the period they spent studying in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.

As with existing policy settings, an individual can only be granted one Post Study Work Visa during their lifetime.

What This Means for International Students

These changes provide additional flexibility for international graduates who wish to gain New Zealand work experience after completing their studies.

The introduction of the Short-term Graduate Work Visa creates a new pathway for graduates who may not currently qualify for a Post Study Work Visa, while the expansion of eligibility for Graduate Diploma holders offers more opportunities for skilled graduates to remain and work in New Zealand.

Students considering study pathways should carefully assess how these changes may impact their future visa options and career planning.
