English Language Requirements Extended to AEWV Skill Level 3 Roles from 1 June 2026

English Language Requirements Extended to AEWV Skill Level 3 Roles from 1 June 2026

The New Zealand Government has announced an important update to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) settings. From 1 June 2026, minimum English language requirements will also apply to ANZSCO and National Occupation List (NOL) Skill Level 3 roles.

This change is designed to support better migrant integration into New Zealand workplaces and communities while ensuring workers understand their employment rights and obligations.

What Is Changing?

Currently, English language requirements only apply to AEWV applicants in Skill Level 4 and 5 occupations. However, from 1 June 2026, applicants for Skill Level 3 AEWV roles will also need to demonstrate they can speak and understand English.

Applicants may meet the English requirement through:

  • Citizenship from an English-speaking country

  • Previous work or study completed in English

  • Recognised English language test results

The updated rule will apply to new AEWV applications lodged from 1 June 2026 onwards.

Why Has This Change Been Introduced?

According to the New Zealand Government, extending the English language requirement aims to:

  • Help migrants integrate more successfully into New Zealand society

  • Improve communication in workplaces

  • Ensure migrants understand their rights and responsibilities

  • Support workers in raising concerns about non-compliant employers when necessary

The change also creates greater consistency across different AEWV skill levels.

Who Is Exempt From the New Requirement?

Certain visa categories and applicants will not be affected by the new English language rule.

Exemptions Include:

  • Global Workforce Seasonal Visa applicants

  • Peak Seasonal Visa AEWV applicants

  • AEWV Job Change applications

In addition, transitional arrangements have been introduced for existing AEWV holders.

Transitional Arrangements for Current AEWV Holders

The Government has confirmed that no one currently holding a valid AEWV will be affected retrospectively while their visa remains valid.

The following exemptions will apply:

Existing AEWV Holders Expiring on or Before 1 December 2026

People who currently hold an AEWV that expires on or before 1 December 2026 will be exempt from the new English language requirement when applying for another AEWV at Skill Level 3.

Applicants Who Previously Provided English Evidence

Migrants who have already provided acceptable English language evidence in a previous AEWV application will not need to provide it again.

These transitional measures are intended to provide fairness and allow sufficient time for migrants to prepare for English testing if required in the future.

Important Information for Employers

Employers recruiting workers into Skill Level 3 positions from 1 June 2026 should begin preparing for the updated requirements now.

It is important to note that:

  • The English requirement applies based on the date the AEWV application is submitted

  • Applicants applying from 1 June 2026 onwards must meet the requirement even if their employer received a Job Check token before that date

Employers should ensure prospective candidates are aware of the new rules early in the recruitment process.

What Should Migrants Do Now?

If you are planning to apply for an AEWV under a Skill Level 3 occupation after 1 June 2026, it is recommended that you:

  • Check whether your occupation falls under Skill Level 3

  • Review acceptable English language evidence options

  • Prepare for an English language test if required

  • Seek professional immigration advice before lodging your application
